Hi there!
Welcome to Travelling the World in 650km2, my Toronto international travel blog!
Ever since I was small, travelling to new places and experiencing different cultures was something I wanted to do. I was fortunate to travel quite a bit as a child and teen but, as I got older, and it was no longer my family paying for trips, this quickly became more difficult to do.
As I’m sure many can sympathize, paying for trips around the world is not easy. Work schedules, money, relationships, timing, health concerns — they can all get in the way. And, especially as the world has changed due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, our travels are restricted more than they might have already been.
Thankfully, I live in one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world — Toronto.
Even after spending just a bit of time in Toronto, it is quickly apparent that the city’s multiculturalism is intertwined into most aspects of the Torontonian way of life — through the culinary scene, arts, entertainment, and businesses.
With over 3 million residents as of 2022, Toronto was once named the most diverse city in the world by BBC Radio. Torontonians are known to value and celebrate diversity like few other places on the planet. As Yung Wu, CEO of Toronto’s MaRS Discovery District, put it, “Canadians are wired differently. We embrace differences differently. We assimilate differently. We approach change differently.” In fact, in the City of Toronto, 51% of residents are not born in Canada with over 250 ethnicities and 170 languages are represented in its 650km2.
This is where the idea for this blog began.
Through the lens of Toronto, “travelling the world” is possible when the real deal isn’t. By visiting the cultural neighbourhoods, restaurants, attending events, and experiencing everything that the multicultural groups within the city have to offer, we can get a taste of travelling around the world.
Come with me as I bring you along on my adventures within the city I call home, experiencing the cultures of the world without ever having to leave the country, province or even the city.
